Dr. Ing. Luigi Ceriani teaches us
by N.Plaksin & I.Vereshchagin (Russia)
from: Best Problems n.2 april-june 1997

The creations of the greatest Italian expert in retroanalysis, Luigi Ceriani, are encyclopaedical. Every one of his compositions is a magnificent manual of retroanalysis and a source of new ideas at the same time. Let's open the unique book of Ceriani "32 Personaggi e 1 Autore" and see, for example, position [A]:

retro 1..., Kf5-e4; 2.g3-g4+, Kf6-f5; 3.Bg4-h5, Ke7-f6; 4.Bc8-g4, Kf8-e7; 5.d7xBc8=B, Ke8-f8; 6.c6xQd7+, Qd8-d7; 7.c5-c6, d7-d6; 8.b4xBc5, Bf8-c5; 9.c3-c4, d6-d5; 10.c2-c3, e7xBd6; 11.Be5-d6, a2-a1=B; 12.Bc3-e5, a3-a2; 13.Bd2-c3, a4-a3; 14.Bc1-d2, a5-a4; 15.d2xNe3, Nf5-e3+; 16.b3-b4, Rc3-f3; 17.Rf3-f2 etc.

[A] L.Ceriani - "32 Personaggi e 1 Autore" 1955; Precisare il percorso del Pa2. [Say exactly what has happened to Pa2.]
[B] N. Plaksin & V.Levshinsky, 11ª Comm. "Die Schwalbe" 1982 Welches waren die letzten 3 EinzelzÜge?
[C] N.Plaksin & V.A.Korolkov, "Die Schwalbe" 1979. Wo wurden die LÄufer geschlagen?

The promotion to Bishop in task [A] is made by capturing a Bishop - d7xBc8=B!
The same motif of Ceriani in task [B] is heard in the form of a retroecho (1.g7xBh8=B+, Kg6-f6; 2.f7xBe8 =B+ etc).
In task [A] the Black Bishop captured on square c8 didn't make even one move!

In task [C] all the original Bishops didn't move and were captured in their initial places (c1, f1, c8, f8).
In task [A] the idea of capturing a piece on its initial square is realized.

[D] L. Ceriani - 1_ Pr. Memorial V. De Barbieri, "Italia Scacchistica" 1943; Quale fu il 1_ tratto della Donna nera originale e di quella promossa? [Which it was the first move by original and promoted Black Queen?]
[E] L. Ceriani, "32 Personaggi e 1 Autore", 1955; Quale fu il 1_ tratto delle donne originali? [Which it was the first move by original queens?]
[F] N. Plaksin & A. Kislyak - 2ª H.M. "The Problemist" 1984 Alfils (promoted) e4, a5. Q moves?

This idea was splendidly elaborated by Ceriani ("Cattura di un pezzo mai mosso"). For example, in task [D] the original Black Queen was captured on d8, and the first move of the promoted Black Queen was Qa1-a2!

In task [E] both (White and Black) original Queens were captured, on d1 and d8!
In [E] promoted Queens made a number of moves, but in [F] none of the queens moved (1.h7-h8=Q# h2xg1=Q etc).
The using of fairy forms is the best way of experimental development for retroanalysis at present.

[G] L. Ceriani; "32 Personaggi e 1 Autore" 1955. Trovare la traiettoria del Pa2. [Find all the moves by Pa2]
[H] L. Ceriani; "32 Personaggi e 1 Autore" 1955. Aprire la gabbia ovest. [Open west cage]

In [A] we also see the other theme elaborated by Ceriani - excelsior: a2xNb3-b4xBc5-c6xQd7xBc8=B!
In [G] there is a combination of excelsior - a2xQb3xc4xd5x Be6xf7xRg8=R! - and capturing the promoted piece - 1...Nf7xRh8+!
The theme of capturing promoted pieces was developed by Ceriani from 1950 awards and got the name of Ceriani theme. For example, in [H] two White promoted Queens were captured-duplex!
In 1955 Ceriani asked a question: "È possibile una triplice promozione?"

[I] N. Plaksin, dedicato a A. Hazebrouck; "Europe Echecs " 1993. #1
[J] N. Plaksin, 3_ premio "Europe Echecs" 1980. Il minor numero di mosse fatte dal re nero? [Minimum number of moves by Black King?]
[K] L. Ceriani, dedicato a T.R.Dawson. 1_ premio "Problem" 1952. Quali furono il primo e l'ultimo tratto dell'A su case bianche? [First and last move by Bishop on whitefield?]

In [I] four White promoted Queens were captured, and in [J] six White Rooks were captured (a7xRb6xRc5xRd4xRe3xRf2xRg1=R+).
Introducing additional conditions into retrotasks is the best way of technical development for retroanalysis at present.
In [A] the last move of a promoted piece is determined exactly - Bg4-h5!
In [K] Ceriani realized the idea of exact first and last retromoves of a promoted piece - Ba8-b7 and Bg8-h7!

[L] L. Ceriani, (versione M. Palewich) “Skakhmaty v SSSR” 1983 L’ultima mossa? [Last move?]
[M] N. Plaksin, 1ª H.M. “Die Schwalbe 1978. #1
[N] N. Plaksin, 1_ pr. “Europe Echecs” 1977. #1. Quale È stata la prima e ultima mossa di )? [Which has been the first and last move by )?]

In [L] the number of thematic personages has been doubled (start - Ba8-b7 and Bb8-a7, finish - Bg8-h7 and Bh2-g1).
In [M] the first and the last moves of White King's Bishop are mutually opposite (Ba8-b7 and Bb7-a8), and in [N] their moves are the same (Bc8-b7 and Bc8-b7+).

A phase of transformation was also present in [A], this phase was strongly developed in Ceriani's works, for example [O].
The author provided the following false way in [A]:

1..., Kf5-e4; 2.g3-g4+; Kf6-f5; 3.Bg4-h5, Ke7-f6; 4.Bd7-g4, Kf6-e7; 5.Be8-d7, Kf5-f6; 6.e7-e8=B, Kg4-f5; 7.e6-e7, Kh5-g4; 8.e5-e6, Kg4-h5; 9.d4xBe5, Bf6-e5; 10.c3xQd4, Be7-f6; 11.c2-c3, Bf8-e7; 12.b3xBc4, e7xBd6; 13.Bb4-d6, ~ ; 14.Bd2-b4, ~ ; 15.Bc1-d2, ~ ; 16.d2xNe3, Nf5-e3+; 17.Retrostalemate !

[O] L. Ceriani, “32 Personaggi e 1 Autore”, 1955. Quali furono gli ultimi 25 tratti? [Which were last 25 moves?]
]P] A. Kislyak, 1_ Pr. “Shakmaty v SSSR” 1985. Matto? [Mate?]

Let's illustrate these aspects of task [A] by comparison with the modern [P] The creations of Ceriani are well known and loved in Russia and the other Republics of the former USSR. Over more than a quarter of a century tasks by Ceriani were published in newspapers and journals in the USSR from Moldavia to Kamchatka.

Several retrotask tourneys on Ceriani's theme were held, and a lot of people took part in competitions to solve Ceriani's tasks. The Credo of Ceriani - the main development of recent research into new ideas! Ceriani was and is our best genius Teacher and inspiration.

I miei piú sinceri ringraziamenti a Nikita Plaksin (ed a Mario Velucchi che ha fatto da tramite) per questo suo magnifico articolo sul nostro grande retroanalista Luigi Ceriani. A.G.
