Vampire Hunter D holds a special place for me, as this was the first anime that I ever bought.

Basically, it is the far far future and the monsters of [mostly Western] legends and myths are now real. A pretty, young girl is bitten by the head of the Lee vampire clan and hires the mysterious vampire hunter who only goes by the name of D.

We learn that not only is D rather good at what he does, as he is half-vampire himself.

Ironic horror... pretty good story, lots of violence and monsters. Hard to beat the combination. [Except that Vampire Hunter D does show its age a little].
