This is basically a retelling of the Superdimensional Fortress Macross series with some slight twists.

The parts that did not really change are that a huge alien space fortress crashed on Earth at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Mankind manages to rebuild the space fortress and launch it. Around this time, the original owners of the Macross fortress show up. The Zentraedi then pursue the humans back to Earth and in the end, the Zentraedi are defeated by a love song.

Several differences are present. Minmei is already a rock star and Minmei and Hikaru do not meet until they are trapped together in the Macross fortress. In addition, the Misa is quite a bit softer character. Lastly, Hikaru has to make a choice between two women, Minmei and Misa. He chooses Misa.

In general, Macross '84: Do You Remember Love? is a bit more violent and graphic then the series that inspired it. It is, however, basically the same story.

The general quality of this piece can be considered in a couple of different lights. First, the animation quality is sometimes excellent, especially in the space battle scenes. The dubbing quality, however, is pretty bad. One can probably say really really bad. While the script seemed passable, the voice actors couldn't, even if they tried.

Like the series, there are a couple of Easter Eggs present in the movie. In particular, a number of the missiles that are fired throughout the movie are really Budweiser Beer cans.
